The Renalware® nephrology database system has been in constant development since 1996, when it started as a FileMaker® database application originally deployed at the Kings College Hospital Renal Unit. The FileMaker version was subsequently installed at the Royal Free Hospital and at Barts and The Royal London (where it was still in use until 2019).

In 2006 the Renalware system was ported from FileMaker to MySQL/PHP. Airslie began work in 2015 to develop a completely new Renalware 2.0 as a Ruby on Rails app running on a PostgreSQL database backend.

The Renalware 2.0 development was started by Nicholas Henry of Montreal’s CivilCode Inc., who was lead developer of Airslie’s Wardware 2.0 app, and his colleague Hugo Frappier. Renalware is now maintained by Airslie’s own programming team.

Renalware 2.0 was launched at King’s on 11 March 2018 after successful data migration from the existing MySQL database. Barts deployed the system at its hospital network in late September 2019. In January 2021 Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust announced that Renalware had been selected as the Renal Information System to be installed in the sites comprising the new Trust: Mid Essex, Basildon & Thurrock University and Southend Hospitals. The MSE launch of Renalware took place over 4-5 December 2021.

In addition to a rich feature set covering all aspects of nephrology coupled with a user-friendly interface, Renalware has a sophisticated Letters Module and interfaces with multiple dialysis machines. Moreover, Renalware 2.0 was the first renal database system to transmit data to the UK Renal Registry and Renal Patient View using the new UKRDC specifications.
