Responding to user feedback, a new “Timeline” feature has been added to our Renalware 2.0 Clinical Summary screen, which is the application’s primary display of a patient’s key clinical data. The Timeline presents a merged feed of the most important patient events and interactions: Letters, Events, Messages, and Clinic Visits.
The Clinical Summary screen displays the most recent six Timeline events, whilst a dedicated Timeline screen presents a complete historical listing. Any given item can be toggled to display the key information about the event, as shown in the following screenshot.

]]>After months of collaboration by the Airslie and MSE IT teams, Renalware was launched at the three trust hospitals over the weekend of 4-5 December 2021. The process had been automated and tested nightly before the actual launch; this included the crucial data migration scripts which imported the legacy data from the three different sites. (One site was running Proton and the other two used eMedRenal.)
The Renalware version installed at MSE contains numerous new features including most notably: SNOMED encoding of problem lists, a “nagging” function for special patient alerts, and dynamic charting of pathology and other data. The MSE Renalware installation is hosted in Microsoft Azure rather than on-site at the hospitals. Once configured, this greatly streamlined the process of developing the MSE version, the associated HL7 feeds, the data migration scripts, and the testing thereof. Airslie are in discussions with Barts to shift their Renalware system into Azure as well.
MSE now joins Barts and The Royal London and Kings College Hospital Renalware user group. Airslie is currently in discussions with several other health providers regarding installations at their sites.
The migration scripts were prepared by Nicholas Fan (who supervised the process during the Barts and The Royal London launch in 2019) and his colleague Oliver Mann. These will now be available for use in any future Renalware installations at sites using Proton or eMedRenal.
]]>MSE provides acute renal inpatient care at Basildon and outpatient and dialysis services at all three hospital sites. There are more than 500 haemodialysis patients treated in four dialysis centres and 300 transplant patients under long-term follow-up. After evaluation proposals from several renal information system vendors, Mid and South Essex decided on Airslie Ltd’s Renalware 2.0. This decision was no doubt influenced not only by Airslie’s submitted bid and demonstration but by the resounding success of Renalware at Barts and The Royal London and at Kings College Hospital Renal Unit.
Airslie’s director, Dr Hugh Cairns commented, “Needless to say we are very pleased and proud that Mid and South Essex have chosen Renalware. We are a small company but we believe our system, based on more than twenty years of end-user-driven development, is an excellent renal database app. Working with the clinicians in the different Trusts, we plan to continue to develop and improve the database. We were very happy with how smoothly the launches went at both Kings and Barts and look forward to getting the system into the Essex hospitals.”
Talks will commence shortly on the key issues of data migration, pathology feeds, and other site-specific issues.
]]>It has been a pleasure working with Airlsie Ltd to introduce Renalware 2.0 to Barts Health NHS Trust. This has been the culmination of many years of hard work and collaboration. We have been extremely pleased with the final product which has introduced efficiencies beyond our expectation.
Working on migrating data into Renalware 2.0 was easier than initially feared. We had excellent support from Airslie Team. Our migration team had no previous experience working with Postgres so the help provided by Airslie was all the more remarkable.
Renalware 2.0 has been running at Kings but it required extensive customisation prior to launch. We thank Airslie who completed this work quickly and efficiently. We were impressed with the flexible structure of the database allowing us to easily and quickly map 15 years of historical data fields.
Asking clinicians to change database after 15 years was a daunting prospect. We reduced clinical activity for the launch day. But the transition was much smoother than expected. Theo was employed to “walk the wards” trouble shooting but had little to do after the first 2 days. Our dedicated “Renalware Helpline” was barely used. This is a testament of the intuitive “look and feel” of Renalware 2.0.
Renalware 2.0 has been running for over 3 months. It has been a great success. It is fast and efficient. No longer have to wait 15 minutes to load the old database. No longer have to interrupt consultations waiting for “Egg timer”! Customisation has allowed us to capture data more accurately. Querying data and generating reports to help patient care is much easier (improved data quality has really helped!).
Best of all is how Renalware 2.0 has influenced our behaviour to improve patient care. Personalised “home page” highlights draft letters that need to be reviewed, messages from other users and alerts. Number of draft letters that wait for more than 14 days to be reviewed has plummeted by more than 90%!
What a difference to old system! Starts up quickly and no more egg-timer!
Airslie is of course grateful to Dr Fan and the entire Barts team for carrying out such a relatively smooth launch of Renalware 2.0 and we continue to work with his Barts colleagues to add new features and otherwise enhance the system.
]]>Along with Nicholas and David, Theo Barr and Cherry Lim coordinated the staff training sessions for around 450 Filemaker users performed over 2 weeks.
The success of the launch at Barts, which was prepared for in a relatively short period of time, is a model for how such complex database upgrades, including significant amounts of detailed legacy data, can be managed. The very short training and transition time is also a testament to Renalware’s highly intuitive interface.
